That totally makes me think of this image from George Melies' 1902 film "A Trip to the Moon" (which I believe is the first science fiction film ever made):
Netflix has it on the compilation entitled "Melies the Magician", which is in my queue in part because one of the included titles is "The Infernal Cakewalk"(!).
(I was going to try to be all nifty & do a hyperlink for the pic, but fear of abject failure, in tandem with the fact that I really ought to be wearing my insurance wizard's hat instead of the film geek one (or something silly like that), put a hasty end to my ambitions. Nuts!)
