Now that it's free, I'm using NewsGator's NetNewsWire (synced up with FeedDemon on my work PC). Word. I'm wondering how I'm really going to be able to read the 1,000+ feeds waiting for my information-hungry gaze, but I suspect I'll make a dent.
I had been mostly happy with this setup since installing NNW on Monday (especially after I figured out how to post to del.icio.us inside of NNW and FB -- whoo, boy!! [the process is very different on both, btw]), except for this one, infuriating problem: for some reason, some of my subscriptions were getting duplicated. Once cloned, the font for this subscription also turned white for both entries. Weird! Unless I am absolutely clueless on how to hunt down answers to tech problems (which could very well be the case), I couldn't find a solution through the NewsGator forums, Mac OS X Hints or Ranchero Software's NetNewsWire Support resource suggestions
I was about to give up and go to bed, but (y'all know I didn't cause I stayed up to write this) then something clicked. I dove straight into the Application Support directory for NNW and behold!, preference files aplenty. I targeted the most obvious culprit, "Subscriptions.plist". I was about to delete it when the same thing that made the Ouija pointer spin made my fingertips click on the Backups folder. Hot: backup subscription files. I duplicated "Subscriptions 2008-01-14.plist" (the original "Subscription.plist" file), swapped it out with the "current" .plist file, renamed the original "Subscriptions.plist" and then fired-up NNW. (You followed all that, right?) Because I created a synced NewsGator account, all of my newly acquired feeds were populated and the cloned subscriptions were gone. Yes, I am awesome.
What's more, I figured out what causes the mysterious duplicate feeds. After the fix, I thought it time to add some more subscriptions. Just after adding a specific subscription for the NYTimes Magazine, I manually moved it from the bottom of the feed list next to its sister feed for NYTimes. It cloned itself and turned white!! What the?! Then I noticed NNW was still downloading/syncing all of the feed information via the status menu down at the bottom of the window. Bingo. I tried moving another subscription while it was still downloading information and the clone happened again.
So, what we've learned today is, refrain from click-happy subscription rearranging! And when in doubt, check out/backup/delete those preference files.
